Etiology: The etiology of acne vulgaris and comedones is largely unknown. Predisposing causes include hereditary or familial tendencies or disturbances in the metabolic or hormonal balance affecting activity of the sebaceous glands. Specific exciting factors may include excessive carbohydrates and fats,food allergies, food rich in iodine, gastro-intestinal disturbances, endocrine disorders, psychogenic factors, ingestion of halogens and contact with chemicals such as tar or chlorinated hydro-carbons. It is most commonly associated with adolescence. For unexplained reasons, the lesions may become worse during the premenstruum. The symptoms acne are often a chronic inflammation of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles of the skin characterized by papules or pustules. Cysts and nodules may develop and scarrring is common. It is usually associated with seborrhea congestiva (a facial form of affection with elevated patches having crusts and scars).
